When I Know I’ve Been Cruel
This was first published May 14th, 2021
When I know I’ve done something out of a cruel or vindictive intention, the first thing that happens is I feel a pit in my stomach. A sense of dread washes over me and my inner voice starts up with the shame and self-hatred.
Next, I remember that it is part of a human experience to act out of unkind intentions, and I laugh at the simple mindedness of it.
Then I say “this isn’t what I want to be” and I make the corrections I need to make.
I could not do any of this if I didn’t face transgressions with acceptance and understanding.
Acceptance and understanding of human cruelty do not preclude healthy relationships.
They facilitate them.
